After a good long sleep last night, Sergio was feeling a bit better today. The medication is still making him feel very tired and sedated looking but he is more comfortable today. The nurse noticed that Sergio’s stomach was quite bloated and firm to the touch which indicates that he is constipated from the array of medication. We were allowed to take him out of his bed for cuddles which he loved and he was completely chilled out in our arms. Después de haber dormido bien la noche pasada, Sergio se sentía un poco mejor hoy. El medicamento sigue haciendo que se sienta muy cansado y...

Sergio went down to theatre this morning for an EGD (endoscopy). Afterwards the surgeon said that they had difficulty keeping his oxygen saturations levels up during the operation and hence couldn’t spend as much time with their scope as they had hoped for. Its either his tracheomalacia or an infection that is causing this breathing problem. However on the positive side, they commented that his esophagus was looking good with no apparent leaks visible and that they would proceed in the future with a larger dilation balloon to help strengthen its structure. Sergio has continued to be...

You get some good days and bad days when you have a longterm hospitalized child and today was truly a bad one for Sergio. We had great expectations to see him more awake today but they were unfortunately dashed as he didn’t cope with waking up. He had two very bad desaturation periods where he turned purple in the face and was shaking terribly. He immediately had to be bagged on both occasions by the Respiratory team as they tried to get oxygen levels back up. He struggled to remain calm and his heart rate just shot through the roof for what seemed like forever. Eventually the Doctors...

The paralytics were turned off this morning and we weren’t waiting that long when Sergio began to show signs of waking up with his fingers and toes beginning to twitch a lot. Mammy was there when he opened his eyes and tried to smile back at her. It was a bit too early for him though as the paralytic medication was still in his system. However an hour later and with more strength regained, Sergio was delighted with himself and he had endless smiles for all around. It is such a relief to see him awake again and hopefully now he can recover his full strength over the next couple of...

Its hard to see Sergio being back in a medically induced coma once again but he looks so peaceful and his vital signs are relatively stable. It was a very long operation that he went through last Friday and the Doctors have said that Sergio is a very strong boy. Hopefully by tomorrow night, he may open his eyes and start to wake up slowly.
