Day 75: Friday 6/07/2012
After all the consent forms were signed off, Sergio went for his surgery at 10am. The surgeon rang at 7pm saying that they had just finished and that everything went well. It was too long a day waiting for that phone call to come through but we are so relieved to hear that he is OK. The surgeon explained that Sergio will be back on heavy medication and won’t be allowed to wake up until next Monday at the earliest. Sergio is finding it hard to wean off the ativan medication. His sleeping pattern is very much broken up and as a result he just looks exhausted in the bed. So it was brilliant to see him then smile at Mammy when she took him out for some cuddles. Tadhg his twin brother was really good today with Sergio and he got stuck into playing with him in a very gently manner. Sergio was delighted having his brother interact with him. There is a slight possibility that he may go for surgery tomorrow morning depending on a slot becoming available and we are awaiting to hear confirmation of this. The...

It is becoming very noticeable that Sergio is more settled when somebody is by his side in the room. He was very unset early in the morning and the nurse on duty thought that something might be bothering him apart from his fractured leg. More X-rays were carried out but nothing showed up. Then a play volunteer sat with him and he settled right back now. No sooner had she left his room, Sergio became quite agitated again. This afternoon, the Occupational Therapist noticed that Sergio was struggling to track objects with his eyes. She wasn’t sure whether it was because he was tired or if was the continued medication that he is still on or if it is something else. The matter was passed on to be discussed further during this evening’s Doctor rounds. Sunday was a good day for Sergio with all his vital levels in the right place. A new cast was put onto his right leg. It is a good recovery sign that he is moving this leg much more now and it doesn’t appear to be causing him any discomfort. His sleeping pattern is currently totally unpredictable.
