Day 17: Wednesday 9/05/2012

The surgical team are very happy with the growth of Sergio’s esophagus since last Thursday. After studying his daily x-ray, they are quite impressed with its daily growth and have already indicated that if the esophagus continues to grow at this rate then Sergio could be scheduled for his repair operation within the next two weeks. This is a very exciting development and we are so happy with the good news.  Also this afternoon Sergio received some beautiful cards and drawings from his cousins in Dublin and we have started to decorate his room with theses pictures. We would also like to...

Day 16: Tuesday 8/05/2012

Sergio’s surgeon was in early attending to the tightening of Sergio’s sutures through his back. An X ray was carried out afterwards to measure the growth of his esophagus but I will have to wait to see the surgeon again before hearing the results. Sergio’s heart-rate was a bit higher than normal in the early afternoon but thankfully it settled back to normal. El cirujano de Sergio vino pronto esta manana para estirar  las suturas de Sergio por la espalda como todos los dias. Le hicieron un rayos X para medir el crecimiento de su esófago, pero tendremos que esperar a ver...

Day 15: Monday 7/05/2012

Today is a sad day, Rosa’s last day with Sergio before returning home to Dublin to look after Sergio’s twin brother, Tadhg. Obviously as a loving mother, it was quite difficult to say goodbye to Sergio but having spent two weeks at his bedside, she has been reassured that she is leaving him in good hands here in the hospital. Hope the family can be together soon when Sergio comes out of the coma. Hoy es un dia triste, es el ultimo día de Rosa con Sergio antes de regresar a Dublín para cuidar del hermano gemelo de Sergio: Tadhg. Obviamente, como una madre que adora a su hijo, fue...

Day 14: Sunday 6/05/2012

According to the ICU medical team, Sergio has being doing well since the operation last Thursday. The nurses are changing his bed position on the hour, thus so far so good. Since to have access to free wifi in Sergio’s room, we can easily Skype family and friends back home in Ireland. It’s brilliant for Sergio to be able to listen to the voices and music from both his Spanish and Irish families thanks to modern technology. It’s no surprise then that there’s plenty of jigs and reels flowing out of his room everyday. Also today the Children’s Hospital held their...

Day 13: Saturday 5/05/2012

Like most other hospitals, things quieten down here at the weekend.  The hospital chaplain visited Sergio today and said a lovely prayer for him. The nurses frequently change his bed position ever so slightly to prevent bed sores from occurring whilst in his coma. They are very careful to do this genteelly as there is always a risk of rupturing the tightened esophageal traction sutures.  Needless to say he is being well looked after by everybody here. A beautiful event happened today. Rosa noticed that when she was talking to Sergio, his heart-rate level would increase on the monitor....
