Day 12: Friday 4/05/2012

This morning, we got a full briefing on yesterday’s successful surgery from the medical team. Sergio’s esophageal gap was indeed quite large but thankfully Dr Jennings was able to put the sutures in place. During the long operation the team spotted some other issues that they are now going to have to keep a close eye on. In brief this includes Sergio’s left vocal chord nerve and his continued tracheomalacia. They explained that Sergio did extremely well during the procedure and that the long process of recovery had now truly started with many more further operations...

Day 11: Thursday 3/05/2012

Sergio’s operation was a success! Thanks God and thanks Dr Jennings and his team. Surgeons placed the traction sutures in the tiny esophageal ends and they increase tension on these sutures daily until the ends are close enough to be sewn together. They increase tension each two weeks for the interior sutures too, so this is the first surgery of many and we don’t know how many more surgeries he will need until the ends are close enough to be sewn togther. We just have to wait. Sergio’s will stay on a coma for at least one month. We know Sergio can have some complications...

Day 10: Wednesday 2/05/2012

First-graders in a school in Milton in Boston sent a parcel of handmade cards to Sergio’s room. The colorful cards contained good luck messages for Sergio ahead of his big operation tomorrow. Channel Five News were in interviewing Dr Jennings and filming Sergio playing with his toys. He was totally distracted by the bright light coming from the camera and then made strange with the reporter afterwards. As soon as the camera crew left the room, he was back to his usual self; laughing and giggling. We reckon that he must have mistaken the TV crew for a medical team. We had two surprise...

Day 9: Tuesday 1/05/2012

The day quite literally started off on a bright note with the music therapist introducing herself and her instruments to Sergio. He was intrigued with the beautiful songs and quickly got stuck into playing along with his tambourine. We then got word from Dr. Jennings’s team that Sergio’s operation has once again been pushed back by another day to Thursday. This was due to logistical problems with theatre time. Obviously we were a little bit disappointed on receiving the news but happy at the same time, knowing that now we had more time to be with Sergio before he goes into that...

Day 8: Monday 30/04/2012

A VUCG scan was preformed on Sergio to rule out the possibility of having a urinary tract infection of the bladder and kidney. The procedure took no more than 20 minutes and Sergio was very brave to endure the pain throughout. The results were positive and Sergio was allowed to return to his room to rest. In the afternoon friends from Dublin, Tom and Pauline Mulligan visited and Sergio as always had plenty of smiles for them, that’s once he got to know them. It was very nice of them to drop by and play with Sergio. The planned MRI scan at 9:30pm was cancelled due to staffing issues so...
