Day 25: Thursday 17/05/2012

Sergio went to the operating room at 7:30am Boston time and arrived back at around 5:30pm. Even though the gap between his esophageal pouches is agonizingly close, during the procedure the surgeons felt that there would be too much tension on the structure of his esophagus if they went ahead and rejoined it under so much tension. This would have certainly increased the risk of it leaking in the future. So a difficult but wise decision was made to insert new external sutures to his upper esophageal pouch and wait another two weeks to allow time for his esophagus to grow some more. We are not...

Day 24: Wednesday 16/05/2012

Sergio had a small period of desaturation in the morning time but after changing his bed position, he immediately became more comfortable and his oxygen levels returned to normal. Tomorrow is a big day for  Sergio. He will undergo a ten hour operation to hopefully rejoin both ends of his esophagus. Everything kind of hinges on this crucial operation so please keep Sergio in your prayers tomorrow. Sergio tuvo un pequeño periodo de desaturación por la mañana, pero una vez que le cambiaron de postura en la cama, inmediatamente se acomodo y sus niveles de oxígeno volvieron a la normalidad. ...

Day 22: Monday 14/05/2012

Today I had the great privilege of meeting Dr John Foker who is the inventor of the Foker technique which Sergio is currently undergoing. Even though Dr. Foker is semi-retired, he is still a senior consultant of the Center for Advanced Reconstruction of the Esophagus (CARE). The results of the gap study are very encouraging and as a result Sergio may go for an operation to join up both ends of his esophagus as early as this Thursday. It’s great that we find ourselves in this position so early, however we do understand that Sergio will have many further operations to fully repair his...

Day 18: Thursday 10/05/2012

Sergio’s levels are continuing to be stable in his drug-induced paralysis. This afternoon, he went down to another floor so that a gap study could be preformed. The procedure could about 45 minutes from start to finish. Afterwards when Sergio was brought back to the room,  I had the opportunity to look at the images of Sergio’s growing oesophagus.  I was delighted with what I saw as its continuing to grow fairly rapidly. To celebrate and congratulate her son, Rosa had a long one-to-one video chat with Sergio through Skype so that she could continue to comfort him. Los niveles de...

The Lyons Den “Fight for Sergio” Boxing Tournament Great Success

Sergio O’Connor’s family would like to thank Willie Lyons and his family; Barry, Brian and Neill  for organising a super night of ‘White Collar Boxing’ in Innis Fail’s GAA Club on the 21 April. There was a great atmosphere and the boxing was tremendously exciting. The boxers spent months preparing and it showed in the ring; they were fit as fiddles. Musicians Tomás Ó Broin and Cormac Chambers gave it their all. Members of the Bonny Men showed their mettle when Barry Lyons and Adam Whelan gave an all mighty performance. Young Fiachra Potts in his first bout...
