The news is not good at all. According to his night nurse, Sergio had a long rough night fighting the fever symptoms. The doctors kept a vigilant eye on his ever deteriorating condition. I got a phone call at 2:45am saying that Sergio wasn’t well. The doctors decided that an oesophagram needs to be performed on Sergio as quickly as possible. I was completely devastated by the results as they discovered that Sergio had a leak in his oesophagus. It was this leak that was making him feel so sickly. It’s very hard to take on board the bad news as everyone believed that Sergio was...

His fever is back again but worse this time. As a precaution, the doctors have decided to stop his peg feeds and start IV nutrition instead. Sergio was restless in bed and very sweaty. He barely had enough energy to open his eyes. Even though he wasn’t fully awake, neither could he could sleep properly as his facial expressions showed excruciating pain. It could be a number of things that is causing him such distress. He is teething four back moulders simultaneously. An infection in his trachea has also been identified today. All of these combined issues have resulted in Sergio’s...

Sergio had a fever last night and as a result he wasn’t feeling too well. In the morning time he seemed tired and didn’t want to wake up at all. He looked miserable with the high temperature and the nurse did her best to try and bring down his temperature. On the positive side, the respiratory team came by and discussed the possibility of using a mobile ventilator so that Sergio can be brought for a walk around the ward in the next couple of days. However by evening time, it became clear that something was seriously bothering him as his levels were constantly up and down which...

Sergio was up early today and was practising his bodhran before the Tradathon started up. The nurse got the livestream up on the large computer screen so that Sergio could see and listen to the music throughout the day. For about an hour, he was sitting up in his tumble chair with the bodhran in one hand and the rattle in the other. It wasn’t long before he tired himself and had to take a break from the session so that he could go for a sleep. It was truly amazing to see all the support at the various sessions throughout the world. Many thanks to all the many organisers of the sessions...

Day 47: Friday 08/06/2012

Sergio has been a busy man over the last couple of days. He went down again to the xray department this afternoon to undergo a GJ feeding tube insertion. This will allow Sergio to receive feeds directly into his jejunum thus bypassing the stomach. This temporary feeding tube will ensure that he doesn’t suffer any reflux episodes and it also gives more time for his oesophagus to heal completely. His temperature spiked really high this morning and may be sign the first sign of withdraw symptoms from his heavy medication. However when awake, he was still in a cheerful mood and loved...
