Day 25: Thursday 17/05/2012

Sergio went to the operating room at 7:30am Boston time and arrived back at around 5:30pm. Even though the gap between his esophageal pouches is agonizingly close, during the procedure the surgeons felt that there would be too much tension on the structure of his esophagus if they went ahead and rejoined it under so much tension. This would have certainly increased the risk of it leaking in the future. So a difficult but wise decision was made to insert new external sutures to his upper esophageal pouch and wait another two weeks to allow time for his esophagus to grow some more. We are not too disappointed by this as the surgeons explained the strong possibility of this outcome beforehand and furthermore this course of action is fairly common enough with other long gap EA babies. This picture was taken before the surgery started.

  2. May God watch over Serigo, his family, the surgeons and staff in Boston and may he send his spirit to guide them in all the difficult decisions they have to make.
