Sergio’s multi-disciplinary team meeting was held today to discuss the next steps for his treatment. It was both impressive and reassuring to see the various medical staff in attendance working together to ensure that all parties are informed of the upcoming plan as the results last week showed us Sergio’s esophagus narrow.
The agreed plan is for Sergio to go for a different type of dilation this Wednesday or Thursday. During this dilation they will inject steroids into the esophagus tissue that is stricturing with the hope that it may prevent this scar tissue from tightening. They will then repeat this process a week later and wait for a further two weeks or so before performing another esophagram to see if the steroids have worked. Everyone agreed that Sergio has done superbly since being off the ventilator but that his trachea must remain in place until all dilations are completed.
Sergio is rapidly developing a lovely bubbly personally since being discharged from ICU. This ward really suits him as it allows him to be a child in terms of play activities and the nurses are very accommodating as they happily work around his new routine. He is sleeping much better during the night and always has a sweat smile on his face first thing in the morning.
Sergio’s aunt and uncle flew in from Madrid this evening. They are staying for a week so it’s great to have them here with us. They couldn’t get over the size of Sergio and Tadhg now. His uncle Rafa had Sergio in stitches laughing with his funny antics. It was a lovely event to witness.
El equipo que lleva a cabo lo de Sergio tuvo una reunion hoy para discutir los pasos a seguir en su tratamiento. Es impresionante y tranquilizador ver a los diversos cirujanos y médicos asistentes trabajando juntos para asegurar que todas las partes estén informadas del próximo plan ya que el esofago de Sergio se ha ido cerrando y ahora esta estrecho por donde se unio.
El plan acordado para Sergio es ir a por un tipo diferente de dilatación este miércoles o jueves. Durante esta dilatación se inyectan esteroides en el tejido del esófago que esta estenosante con la esperanza de que pueda evitar que este tejido cicatrize formandose tejido nuevo y este tirante. A continuación, repetiran este proceso una semana después y esperaran dos semanas más o menos, antes de realizar otro esofagograma para ver si los esteroides han funcionado. Todos coincidieron en que Sergio lo ha hecho magníficamente ya que se ha apagado el ventilador pero su tráquea debe permanecer en su lugar hasta que todas las dilataciones se hayan completado.
Sergio está desarrollando rápidamente una bonita personalidad desde que fue dado de alta de la UCI. Esta habitacion en planta realmente le conviene, ya que le permite ser un niño en términos de actividades de juego y las enfermeras son muy serviciales, ya que felizmente trabajan en torno a su nueva rutina. Él está durmiendo mucho mejor durante la noche y siempre tiene una sonrisa en su cara lo primero en la mañana.
La tía y el tío de Sergio llegaron en avión desde Madrid esta noche. Ellos se quedaran por una semana, así que es bueno tenerlos aquí con nosotros. Ellos no podían creer el tamaño de Sergio y Tadhg ahora. Su tío Rafa puso a Sergio de muy buen humor y con carcajadas en cuanto le empezo a hacer cosas. Fue bonito de ver.
