Prior to this morning operation, Dr Jennings explained the entire surgical plan to us in detail. He said that it will take longer to perform this operation due to having to deal with the amount of scar tissue from the previous nissen attempts. Poor Sergio was oblivious to the fact that he was going down for surgery and happily left his room at 8am with a hugh smile on his face while lapping up all the attention from the surgical team.
It was sixteen hours later before Sergio returned back to his room in ICU in a much quieter fashion. Unfortunately the news from the theatre room isn’t good at all. During the latter stages of the 12 hour operation, Sergio’s heart rate and blood pressure were beginning to drop too low thus indicating complete exhaustion. As a matter of patient safety, at midnight it was decided to best halt the operation and give everyone involved a break for a couple of hours. Ultimately they didn’t succeed in performing the nissen wrap and would attempt it again first thing in the morning. It was a long long day for Sergio and he looked really shattered on his return to ICU. Its heart breaking knowing that the poor fellow has to go through all of it once again tomorrow morning.

Dijo que se necesitará más tiempo para realizar esta operación debido a tener que lidiar con la cantidad de tejido cicatricial de los anteriores intentos de Nissen. El pobre Sergio no era consciente de que se iba a cirugía y felizmente salió de su habitación a las 8am con una gran sonrisa en su rostro mientras mantenia toda la atención por parte del equipo quirúrgico.
Dieciséis horas después, Sergio regreso a su habitación en la UCI de un modo mucho más tranquilo. Por desgracia, las noticias desde la sala de operaciones no eran buenas en absoluto. Durante las últimas etapas de la operación de 12 horas, el ritmo cardiaco de Sergio y la presión arterial estaban empezando a caer muy bajo lo que indicaban el agotamiento total. Como medida de seguridad del paciente, a la medianoche, se decidió detener mejor la operación y dar a todos los involucrados un descanso durante un par de horas. En última instancia, no empezaron con la realización de la envoltura de Nissen y lo intentarían de nuevo a primera hora en la mañana. Fue un día largo para Sergio y se le veía muy destrozado a su regreso en la UCI. Se nos rompia el corazón de saber que el pobre tiene que pasar por todo esto otra vez mañana por la mañana.
